Just a Glimpse

One of those better mistakes ..

So, I should know better than to try making salsa late in the day,

especially when the evening agenda includes heading off to a meeting,

and more so when I can't decide which recipe to choose and

so, we make up two different batches.

But hey...I had helpers :) and so we took it on!

While my sister and I chopped away for the cooked versions...

a very capable young man whipped up a batch of fresh salsa

to be enjoyed post haste!

It was delicious and we were quite pleased to have some to tuck away in the fridge.

Ok...so here's what led to my big blunder:

fresh salsa mixed & sampled - yummmmmm, so I already said that
first recipe - cooked and nicely packed into jars
second batch...hmmm...ready to cook just before I have to leave for said meeting
I re-read the recipe which says cook for several hours so I figure I'll leave it cooking while I'm away...ONLY because I have a helper staying behind who agrees to stir once in a while
sitting in the meeting I realize it should only be simmering during this time and at my first opportunity I'll call and have it turned down .... WHICH ..... I promptly forget when we take our break
meanwhile, my poor helper hardly gets time for leisure and feels quite obligated to watch this cooking pot rather closely
I get a call a couple of hours later which went something like this, "Uhm, there's not much left of this salsa!" "It's pretty much cooked out - what do you want me to do with it?"
I RUSH home and sadly look into the pot which was uhm, let's say, well reduced
positive note - this sure smells and tastes like fantastic tomato paste!!
solution - mix in the remaining fresh salsa, bring to boil/simmer for just 10 minutes and jar it

The RESULT: the most fantastic tasting salsa ever, EVER!!! I'm not kidding - I quickly jotted down what I did ~~wrong~~ differently and next year I will be making what I call "Sara's Screw-up Salsa"

What I plan to do different:

~ simmer half the batch for about an hour until it's reduced,

~ add the fresh salsa and simmer 10-15 minutes more and jar it!

Oh, and even better ... I saved on adding tomato paste - didn't need it! Duh!

WAIT...one more very important thing I learned...

You see those tiny beautiful lime green peppers?

habaneros to be exact

WELL ... they shall now be my favourite hot pepper to use

even if they are hotter than ever,

because even through the heat, you can still enjoy all the other flavours

and the heat doesn't linger on forever as with "other" hot peppers.

Yesterday I searched for something yummy and quick to make for supper.

I came across this recipe on several sites so not sure whom to give credit,

but I believe recipezaar finally made me cave and make this.

I love that site, now known as cooks.com,

as you can check out recipes according to how others rate it...works for me!

As for the method, I changed it up due to time limitations

and it turned out fantastic!! The wonderful aroma had two hungry

boys questioning when it would be ready.

CROCK POT CHICKEN WITH BLACK BEANS AND CREAM CHEESE

4-5 boneless chicken breasts (I used 3 for the 3 of us)

1 (15 1/2 oz) can black beans, drained (I rinsed them)

1 (15 oz) can corn, drained (I used frozen which I think tastes fresher)

1 (15 oz) jar salsa (I used medium heat)

1 (8 oz) pkg of cream cheese (I used 4 oz)

Put frozen chicken breasts into crock.

Add beans, corn and salsa on top and cook for 4-5 hours.

Add 1 package cream cheese on top for the last half hour. Stir.

D.O.N.E.

MY METHOD: I wanted this done within the hour so I used fresh chicken breasts

and browned them in a pan until almost done.

Meantime - in a separate saucepan I placed the beans, frozen corn

and salsa and let it simmer while the chicken was cooking.

When the chicken was ready, I placed it in

with the sauce ingredients and covered them up with the sauce.

Simmered for about 1/2 hour, stirring occasionally.

(when I found this getting a little dry I added about 1/2 cup chicken stock which

I happened to be cooking at the same time as well so it was good & hot)

Place cream cheese on top, cover and let heat through,

then stir well into the mix.

Add a little cream if you think it's too thick at this point, I did,

along with a touch more salsa.

I served mine with wild & white rice veggie pilaf.

This was so delicious, we all agreed! The only thing I would do differently next time

is break up the chicken just before serving,

which is what ends up happening anyway as it's so tender :)

Oh, and I plan to use the ample leftovers for chicken enchiladas...

that is if I can get to them before someone else does!

It's a Jungle!

No kidding...you should see my garden!

The plants are huge and they've all grown into each other

to the point that we no longer have rows...

just one big mass of leaves.

I have to pick my beans while standing in the cucumbers!

It's a little scary... I mean, first of all I never know what's lurking

under all that bush...

and secondly,

I'm getting tired just looking at it!

Hubby, on the other hand is excited as ever.

This is totally his element and he happily picks when I get chicken!

Don't get me wrong, I'm very thankful for the produce

and all the other yummy things to come,

but I'm also somewhat of a perfectionist (I know ...working on it)

and all these rows growing into each other's space

and not keeping orderly,

well...it doesn't sit well with me

and they better not show a hint of invading my perennial space, or....or

nevermind...

I'm going to make some bean soup now because we really do love it,

and then I have to figure out what to do with

today's crop of cucs

'cause they grew out of control when I specifically

requested they be smaller!

BTW...anyone need some cucs

or dill, or summer savory, or lettuce, or basil????

I actually can't remember what else is under there!

This summer has just been so busy with this, that & the other. Truth is

I just don't take the time needed these days to blog about all that's going on,

exciting stuff (besides my last post)

our 30th Anniversary ..

our first solo road trip as a couple

since our honeymoon!

(I'm not talking about attending 3-day conventions either...

Today we're celebrating 2 more birthdays! Our oldest grandson is turning 5

and since they'll be away when his little sister turns 3,

we'll celebrate that one today as well.

I'm so looking forward to it - parties do a soul good !! :)

What a great way to end the week...Praising God for a new life that this Nana's arms are just aching to hold some more :)

The little man came into the world at 2:30 this morning and we just couldn't wait to head to the city and meet him...

I know one little boy who will be so excited to have a boy cousin, though he's been very happy with all the cute little girls he lovingly calls his sisters :)

I love the sound of trickling water outside ...

mind you, not the ground-soaking, gutter-busting downpours

we've had the last couple of days!

I've been pondering how to incorporate some type

of water feature in the back yard

that would be safe for the little ones.. definitely NO ponds!

This past Mother's Day Les bought me a fountain...

which til now, has been sitting in the box.

"It's time", he said Wednesday night.

So, I assisted in the unpacking and sorting of pieces

and then ran off to pick up a few groceries.

When I returned... he had picked the perfect spot

and it was up and running! :)

(sorry about the quality, it was getting dark)

He built a little fire

and we sat and enjoyed the fruits of his hard work.

It was quiet and peaceful

and I took in as much of the "sounds" as possible

before we retired for the night.

Notice the moon peeking up over the trees?

That's something we haven't taken time for yet this spring...

duly noted!

This morning I took a quick peek out the back door to check how

the garden was fairing with all the rain.

I noticed the fountain didn't need a pump to make it overflow..

The downpours continued relentlessly and when the rains let up

for a wee bit I stepped outside for another peek....

I gasped when I saw this...

We just may have got the timing wrong after all!

Tho this does make me sad :(

I know others have had much more 'turmoil' with all this rain,

and I am so thankful we're still on dry, un-shifting ground,

the basement isn't wet,

and as far as I know...with the flying branches, falling trees,

etc.,

no one here.. in sunny Manitoba.. has been hurt!!

Pulling up roots..

I LOVE SPRING and the changes that come with it...

I love getting down and dirty in my garden, when my strength allows,

pulling out weeds and prettying things up...

I love anticipating how I'll move things around for a bit more enjoyment...

I love seeing the results of hard labour, when things are growing and blooming

as they were meant to.

The sad part though is ... when you think all is lovely ..

but then you get a closer look and see the weeds...UGLY weeds!

In order to save a remnant I'll have to uproot much of this plant!

I found them elsewhere too,

creeping in between every nook & cranny,

some safely tucked under rocks ...

some posing as part of a plant (the nerve!).

Some were easy to control - others required some major digging.

It's like they sprang up overnight, and yet, I know

that's not how it happens!

Life's a little like that isn't it...

The 'weeds' can come in oh so subtly... and, given the chance to flourish,

they'll choke out the beauty that God intended to be there.

We need to be constantly keeping things in check.

I know what I'm doing today... see you outside!

That is, after I spend a little time with my gardener :)

Oh, you might be wondering how I did with the spring cleaning...

let's just say it didn't go as planned,

the weather turned nice :)

Spring Cleaning Anyone?

Desperately awaiting spring here as many of you are. At least it looks like we've got our sunshine back. Wasn't that fog unbelievable!

I've decided that today will mark the start of my spring cleaning...maybe that will help me feel that green grass and tulips are really just days away!

I'm going to start in our bedroom since that seems to be the place where things end up that don't have a place of their own. I'm telling you this year I really want to change that and keep my bedroom off limits to strays! And it's time to get rid of excess everywhere else too!

Our ladies group is making an annual event of a spring de-Clutter the Clutter auction which has been so much fun. I'm already thinking I'll have a few extra contributions this year.

So, here's hoping I stay on task! It's far too easy for me to think of other worthwhile things to do...like baking... Oh shoot, that is a pretty good option. Anyone want to come over and bake while I do some cleaning?

That reminds me....it's time for lunch :) Right after that though, I'm definitely turning up the tunes and diving in!!

Oh and I came across these pictures...you never know what you'll find in my house...sometimes there's some pretty fun stuff amongst the clutter!

Oh my...just looked at the time...better get started!

Seems like forever since I've been on here... life has definitely been busy, but I do want to share two huge praise items with you.

These last few weeks I've been quite busy with my mom attending various appointments with her doc and specialists due to some health issues. She has been "through the wringer" so to speak with numerous tests, etc., and we can thankfully say that our worst fears have been relieved, at least to the doctors' knowledge.

What they did find is treatable. We still need to get to the bottom of a couple of issues, but hopefully nothing else is going on that they aren't detecting.

I have to say we were quite worried, yet trying all the while not to be since we need to be trusting God in all things...especially times like these! I just wasn't prepared at all to lose her yet and the memories of what Mom T went through became all too fresh again.

Last week was especially difficult. On Wednesday, as we pulled into the hospital parking lot where Mom was scheduled for more tests, I asked her if she was nervous. She quickly replied, "Not at all". I admitted that I was and so we took a moment to pray together which was wonderfully calming for me. I'm grateful for the peace she displayed and oh so thankful for God's presence and that they didn't find what we were hoping they wouldn't find.

Still with me? Good...'cause the 2nd praise came only two days later and was the icing on the cake!

Emery Shae was born early Friday morning. The call requesting one of us to sprint down the street to watch over the slumbering came only 2 1/2 hours earlier. What a relief when things went quickly. As one who has been through this "process" on four separate occasions, I ALWAYS pray for a ~~good~~ positive birthing experience (you ladies know what I mean).

We've been praying daily that God would protect this little one (and mama) for this day. I added a little something to my prayer on Thursday night...you see, Friday would be my sister's birthday and she mentioned several times how she was hoping to for this bundle to arrive on her birthday...so I threw in an extra little request. What fun it was to be able to call her with the news - apparently she had prayed the same prayer!

We're so happy to finally be able to hold this little babe...and of course, her mama is feeling much more comfortable too!

So... my dreaded week ended up being more wonderful than I could have imagined - Isn't God amazing!!

And now...it's wayyyy past my bedtime...good night all!

Managed to sew and cut it in one day...
quite an accomplishment for me since I don't have
a designated sewing area...hoping that will change
one day :)

Projects often get started, and then get put away to finish
up another day... or *gasp* never!

when they come for naps...

Then two more dropped in for a "wee" bit to bring greetings.

What a way to start the day!!

A Little Perspective!

In all my 20 plus years of experience, I've NEVER had this happen before...

Went to get some pizza sauce from the pantry only to discover some of the jars had unsealed. So, out they went since I had no idea how long they were that way.

Went down a little later that day and what'd ya know... more unsealed jars. WHAT?!
By the next morning, I had thrown out 15 jars *ouch*!

There was no more deciding what to do with the ripe tomatoes sitting on my counter.

Fast forward a few days - Les and I were out late last Saturday afternoon trying to finish up some errands when my phone rang...

"Hey Mom, I don't want to alarm you but..."

Now, what thoughts go through your head when you hear that? I'll tell you, I had several racing simultaneously.

I took a deep breath and calmly asked, "What's wrong?"

"I think our freezer just died, everything inside is melted....kaput!"

Needless to say we raced back home, errands un-accomplished, and began the laborious task of cleaning out all the dripping, messy things that come out of freezers that are left open!

Apparently, while attempting to fetch a frozen treat, an entire pail of mushy, watery ice cream came jumping out and of course burst open as it hit the floor. It took our "ice-cream lovin'" son a while to scoop it all up off the rug!

Though it wasn't exactly what I had planned for that day...I have to say several good things came out of that messy inconvenience..

~ meat was already partially thawed for the next few meals
~ I started a LARGE stock pot of sommer borscht since there was meat, sorrel and onion greens "ready and waiting"
~ we had a variety of yummy things we cooked up for supper (california chicken and rhubarb pie for starters) Oh yum.
~ cooked up some raspberry sauce so that's ready for the next time someone needs a treat
~ I didn't have any worries about what I'd serve for Sunday lunch
~ my freezer got defrosted and organized (a job I had been putting off), and of course, it's emptier.

And.. a little more perspective..
~ I STILL have food!
~ I STILL HAVE my home and I'm not worried when the next typhoon or tsunami will hit!
~ I'm NOT the mom who didn't get a chance to say goodbye to her teenage son before he was tragically gone!
~ I'm NOT the dad who has to tell his kids mommy's not coming home!
~ I DIDN'T have to hear the tragic news from my doc today (working in a clinic setting you become painfully aware of those who do)

PRAY for those to whom this is a reality...pray tho you know no names or faces...

Don't sweat the small stuff but rather GIVE THANKS to the Lord, for He is good!

I'm off to work today.

Nice surprises

I got a call at work almost at the end of my day...
The "caller" on the other end asked what I thought of his menu idea for supper,
which included some, "fried green tomatoes and onions".

"Don't make too many," I said, thinking I didn't remember if I liked them or not.
My mom used to make them, which I never tried...
and I made them once upon special request
early on in our married life.

The aroma upon entering the door was amazing! I could hardly wait
to chow down!

I asked what he had done...."just added a little basil."

I have to tell you - they were delicious
...so I will share his recipe.

Not the best picture... I almost forgot to take one
before most of them were devoured!

Fried Green Tomatoes & Onions

1 large onion, halved and sliced semi-thickly
2 large green tomatoes, sliced and quartered
1 tbsp butter
1 tsp olive oil
1 tsp basil (that may be a bit much - he just sprinkled some in)
A little salt to taste (very little)

Fry the onions and green tomatoes slowly in the butter and olive oil in a non-stick pan. Turn frequently until they are nicely brown and beginning to caramelize. About half way through the cooking process, add the basil and continue until they are deliciously golden.

Enjoy!

Please say a prayer for our kids today.

Warren & Liane received some sad news yesterday, a day that started out with much anticipation and excitement.

But we know God is sovereign and we rest in that.

Their little one is with Him now, safe...running and playing with siblings and
a little cousin who arrived not so long ago.

I'm picturing my dad with his arms full...
oh how he loveds little ones

It's a beautiful picture when you ponder...

End of an "age"

Wow...once again
it's been forever since I posted...

there's been so much to celebrate, and so little time to blog.

BUT...today is a very important day in the life of one young man,
who happens to be our ~~baby~~ youngest.

A day I've pondered longer than I care to admit...

so here I am..

excited to say...

HAPPY 18th BIRTHDAY, Dustin!!

How can it be this day is already upon me us?
Where did that little boy go who loved to borrow kitchen gadgets
and ice cream pails?

Dustin, you are without a doubt
one very mysterious ~~kid~~ young man...
you've always managed to keep us guessing as to what you'd come up with
next....
and as always, with great determination!

Life has been far from boring
since the very day God chose to give you to us.

You no longer seek out the ice cream pails...

and...we do recognize what you're playing these days,

while other things still remain a mystery...

Dustin...when did you decide ...oh, nevermind!

It's been fun watching you grow to be a man,

and we look forward to seeing where God will lead you
these next few years.

Home sweet home

After our little whirlwind trip out west...we're back home.

Just on time to rescue the garden from towering weeds, and enjoy fresh strawberries...
but more importantly, back to the faces that bring us so much joy :)

We decided not to stop on the last leg of our trip and made it home at about 2 a.m....
figuring no one would be expecting us home until later the next day, we'd have a good chance to sleep in, nice and cozy in our own bed!

Well, we didn't really sleep in much as we heard little voices on the front porch.
Grampa got up and ran to the door to swing it open...me following as quickly as I could so as not to miss out on the happy squealing and little bear hugs! What a way to wake up!!

Anyway, hopefully I can report more on the highlights, but for now...it's time to get some work done...much to do!

Last week started off with learning something new at work...
kinda fun

Watched our youngest walk across the stage at Graduation...
a tad bit emotional

Learned a few things about H1N1 I never knew...
very interesting

Celebrated a sweet baby girl turning two...
definitely a highlight

Attended a funeral of a young husband, father and grandfather...
so sad for the family

Spent an evening with 100+ others at a picnic...
back to fun

And this week?

Starting off on a great note - it's our 29th Anniversary today
and...we have an invite for supper!

Our last Graduate...

I'm really at a loss for words right now...
Can't believe all the years our kids have been schooling have come and gone...
23 years to be exact (almost 1/4 of a century!)

It JUST can't be!

And of course, any mother would say...
it just seems like yesterday...

First day of school...Proud as can be

Oh, this day is bittersweet for sure.

Though I'm so disappointed that my camera
decided to act up,
and I don't have much for pictures to show for the
excitement of the day
I'm so proud of our boy...ooops...young man!!

Can't believe our "baby" *shhhh* just graduated!

I need to go cry now.

Prayers

Just wanted to ask for prayer for two families, though there are certainly more I could include, as each of you would be able to as well...this just hits home for people who are dear to me.

My sis-in-law's brother was in a very serious transport accident and his life is hanging in the balance. He has six young children. They would covet your prayers.

Another sister-in-law's brother died very suddenly during the night. Without any details, I ask if you would please uphold this family in prayer as well.

"And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints." Ephesians 6:18

There's always someone somewhere who could use our intercessory prayer. May we, in the busyness of our day, never forgot to lift one another up in prayer.

Sweet Little Reunion

Well, after two long weeks, the little family is back home together.

I got to pick the two youngsters up at a half-way meeting point.

Little miss "Messy Molly",
appropriately tagged by her other Nana & Papa,
was all smiles.

as was this sweet boy...
did I mention, he gives the most wonderful, long hugs?

After some lunch together with both Nanas, great-grandma and Auntie Stacey,
it was time to head for home.

(saying 'bye' and "thanks for taking such good care of me"
to auntie Stacey)
(For some reason I did not manage to get
Nana Friesen in the picture!)

They slept the whole way back,
then about a mile from home the little man woke,
looked around groggily and said, "I'm almost home!"

Papa was home when we arrived, and settled in
for his...

while "Miss Molly" went straight for this...

Then....she recognized something
in the yard she liked to play in...
the garden!

After munching on a few gooseberries, we managed
to walk her out of the garden so she could stay clean
until Mommy & Daddy arrived.

Auntie showed up at the right time
for them to check out how much the littlest missy
had grown while they were away.

And then...

sweet smiles and long hugs were plentiful
when their much anticipated parents walked in the door...
it was so precious!

We celebrated Father's Day a week early on hubby's side.

Today was to be a very special day...
actually... it still is.

It's a day we were anticipating with many others, near and dear.
Celebrating you, Dad...and 80 years!

Can't believe five months have passed.. since...
how is it possible?
When some days drag on and on... thinking of you.

We miss you Dad,
but wouldn't dream of taking you away
from the celebration you're having (well, maybe a wee bit) ...
one that none of us could conjure up!

Where have we been???

Got the garden in, transplanted plants and shrubs that haven't quite found their 'home' yet, took care of some that were no longer welcome (besides weeds), helped clean out a basement, helped move some friends, re-planted plants that froze! Is this really June?

Regarding the move...what could be more fun than a being with a bunch of ladies donning buckets & Norwex cloths? Ok, don't answer that! Actually, it was fun ...but how cute it was to glance out the window just as the men drove by... standing on the back of the flatbed trailer filled with furniture (they only moved one street over). By the time I got my camera in hand they were too far for a good shot... but they certainly looked like they were enjoying themselves.

I don't think my friend realized how much stuff she had in her little house. We were all surprised to see that much bigger house get filled up! Got me to thinking... maybe I should plan a "mock move" myself. Couldn't hurt!

Do I dare talk about gardening? Anyone else patiently waiting for *shhh* global warming? We certainly felt a little silly going out in the dark, after hearing it may freeze and double-checking the forecast... scampering around with blankets, sheets, boxes... whatever we could find to cover the small-fortune-worth of bedding plants we put out the week prior. We even made a fire and let it burn, hoping to ward off the frost-bites. Actually I thought it was kinda romantic trying to save the little plants, and if it hadn't been so late, and COLD, we would have sat and enjoyed the fire for a bit. Was a little disheartening to find some of the tomatoes still succumbed even after all our efforts.

So, off to the greenhouse once again the next morning, along with many others. Got smarter this time... bought a healthy, already blooming, tomato plant in a pot that can be quickly whisked inside should old Jack come calling again! This will be the last time!!

We're certainly missing two little red-heads who are off visiting their other Nana & Papa (wonder if that's what they call them?) while mommy & daddy are taking a road trip. Oh the adventures they'll have to treasure and talk about! :)

Oh yes, and our summer plans may change... got a phone call yesterday... more about that later!

I know the spring and summer seasons can be a busy time for people, especially those of us waiting to step out of the freezer. Let's not forget to pause and reflect on how truly blessed we are... to thank the One who is so gracious to us! I don't do that enough. There are people all around us who are going through hard times right now... maybe someone out there needs your touch or a listening ear.

You know you're getting older when...

I've never had to worry about bushy eyebrows, in fact, haven't had to pluck many over the years. On this particular morning, I glanced in the mirror and decided it was time to take care of a few fine stray eyebrow hair. I got out my tweezers and began to carefully pluck... carefully I say... as one false move and I won't have eyebrows left! I move in for a little closer look as the one fine, stubborn hair seems to slip from my grasp each time. I give it one more try, pulling the skin taught...only to realize... instead of a fine hair out of place...it's a fine line (aka wrinkle)!

Guess these old eyes aren't what they used to be either!

After a quick chuckle (yes, I did laugh at myself)...I wondered...

"Hmmm, hubby's eyes are worse than mine...and... he still calls me beautiful!"

According to one little "Man"

So...to set the scene...I come out of the bedroom and make my way to the kitchen. As I'm approaching I notice the front door is open just a crack. I stop to ponder how I managed that since I had been out back. I look down and see a little pair of dawgs (shoes) and I think, "Oh, the kids are here!"

"Hello there!" I call, thinking they've gone downstairs to play.

Next thing I see something move...it's a little "man" crouched up against the cupboards next to the door.

The little heart-breaker jumps up and says, "I came to visit you, Nana!"

As Nana smiles with delight and reaches for an extra long, can-never-get-enough-of wonderful hug, she realizes the little man is alone. "Is Mommy coming too?"

"No, she's at home. I'll go home at supper time."

"Oh, I love it when you come visit, but did you ask Mommy... does she know you're here?"

He nods as if to say, "Of course she knows I'm here, where else would I go?"

"Do you think we should call her and let her know you're here safe?" I ask.

"No, she's busy making lunch, and she knows I'm a strong man!"

I manage to convince him that we should call, and show him how to dial the number... all the while feeling a little like a traitor, knowing what will ensue.

When Mommy answers, he happily announces, "Hi mommy, I'm at Nana's...SAFE...I'll come home at suppertime!"

He listens for a while and then his voice begins to quiver as he pleads, "Then how about I come home at lunch?"

He hands the phone to me... I reassure mommy that I will walk him home right away.

A moment later grandpa walks in the door...."Hey grampa, can you quickly play hide-and-seek with me?" They get in one round and then it's time to go.

We get outside and Nana is hoping for a nice slow walk back home, just breathing in our time together. What does he do? He joyfully hops on his bike and races down the sidewalk towards home...

"I can ride so fast, Nana!"

About being strong

I know, I know...haven't been very consistent with this blogging thing.

I have too many excuses...and often can't think what to blog about.

But I ask you... If you had so many little happy feet living close by...
how much blogging would you get done...or anything else for that matter!

For instance...

This little sweetheart got to sleep over at Nana & Papa's
while mommy & daddy
were away "bringing home a little sister"
This is how she wakes up...if that isn't worth some squeezin'
I just don't know...

Oh yes, she also likes to get dressed "by self gamma!"

AND...this little girl

She comes by her beautiful red hair honestly

She is the funniest, sweetest little thing
with one pair of very 'swift' feet...
"are you watching Papa?"

This was her reaction when we looked at her in
disbelief after she scooted quickly onto a bar stool.

It reminded me of her mama (at age 2 1/2)
scooting up a ladder so fast it took my breath away...
don't want to think about it!

Then...there's...

"Muffin"
as mommy & daddy used to refer to her

She just keeps coming up with
more and more things on her list of things to
accomplish before the age of... one-and-a-half! :)

Oh yes, she knows what she wants...
Did I mention... adorable??

AND...even more reasons..

At only 2 days old here, this little girlie
has stolen a few hearts already, especially that of her "big" cousin.
He has learned to evade the camera lens,
but didn't seem to mind posing next to her!

He loves to come visit us, and each time
is a new chance for some fun and excitement
(and some pretty funny stories to boot!)

He races cars and plays some mean drums, but
also has a real soft heart when it comes
to all his "little sisters" as he likes to think of them :)

No More Waiting

before Keziah arrived! She almost had us fooled!

A Better Way

About 10 years ago the group Downhere were just starting out and did a concert at our church. We were able to open our home to a couple of them and gave our youngest the choice whom he would have come stay at our house. At his young age he had quite an attraction to music and was already playing some guitar, so we were sure he'd ask the "guitar guys" to come. We were somewhat surprised when he said, "the drummer". But then again, he was born after a concert and I believe he was imitating kicking the drum pedal when he broke my water!

It was a pleasure to have Jeremy Thiessen (the drummer) and Cory Doak (guitarist, now on his own), come for night. We got to know a little about them, but one little boy truly took to heart a new love for drumming (he played on anything that he could find).

But, this post is really about Downhere, a very... no very talented and sincere group of guys who spread God's love through their music. One of their songs, written by Jason Germaine, that has become another favourite of mine is called "A Better Way". So, if you get a chance to hear them, don't pass it up (though they live in Nashville now and unfortunately don't get to Canada often enough). Listen to the words...just beautiful. Oh, and notice how Jeremy improvises here in the studio.

With Easter upon us...I hope you know how much God loves you. I hope you realize what was sacrificed on your/our behalf. Truly, there could be no better way than what Christ did for us on Calvary's cross...he paid it all!

GIVING HONOUR

Wanting somehow to express my love for my mom on this special day, a Mom who was always giving... I started writing a poem, but soon realized...I'm not a poet (at least not without spending a ridiculous amount of time trying :)

So...I called my sister who seems to be able to do so with little effort. I read to her the few words that I came up with and literally within one minute she put these words together...

Today is to honour A Lady of Faith
our Mother, Caregiver, and Hostess with grace

Your arms always wide open and not only for us,
but all those who came knocking in need of your touch

Whether a cup of coffee or a place to lay their head
no one was ever turned away from your homestead

You're the most generous person we all know

Just when...

A sweet cup of tea

Not so long ago I received a little package.

It was from a very special someone who had
no idea I wasn't feeling up to par,
but she thought of me and sent this ... how sweet!

I don't know about you, but I don't usually get packages
in the mail....especially ones that I haven't ordered!

The last time we visited them (which isn't often enough
due to the distance between us)
she took note of the fact that we shared a love for good tea.
The day before we left she decided we
really should see one more little place, and
introduced me to ...
STEEPS

She especially noticed my fondness for Rooibos tea,
and this place is loaded with every kind you can imagine!
Apparently there are only 4 locations in Canada,
and she's lucky enough to live near one of them.

So, I get this package including one of my favourites,
"Strawberries and Cream"
and a new one to try - "Blueberry Blitz"
which may well become a new favourite!

She also noticed dh loves radishes
so she sent him two special seed packets for us
to plant in the spring...he smiled!

Would you just look at those ... radish watermelon?!
Very intriguing...now, won't those look pretty
in a salad!

And the last thing she included...
besides a good handful of chocolates (most of which
were gone before I snapped these pictures :)

... was this recipe for cookies she had brought
to share with us the last time they visited.
They were absolutely delicious and I consumed
wayyyy more than I should have.

Thank you, Lori, for your sweet thoughtfulness.
I really shouldn't have been surprised,
because you're always thinking of others!

Motivated Monday?

Not sure where to start today...there's so much I'd like to do, and
since I don't have wheels yet and it's too cold to walk anywhere...
well, you get the picture.

Every year I declare March 1st the launch date for spring cleaning....
however, it doesn't always happen that way!

I don't know why it's so difficult to tackle certain projects. Problem
is.... when I'm motivated.... I usually come up with an unrealistic list
of things to do. Today I'd like to bake AND begin spring cleaning.
In reality, I should know that just tackling my (our) bedroom closet
could potentially take the entire day! Maybe it's my way of avoiding
the undesirable once again! (I actually took a picture of my closet
and found it sure doesn't look that bad on film... so, didn't post it.)

But...the sun is shining and I feel like giving it my best shot. I usually
don't wake up feeling rested so it takes me a while to get started in
my day...but I'm determined today.

So, if you're walkin' by and hear the walls rattling, don't worry....
I've got the music cranked up good and loud and ... stuff is gonna fly!

So, what's your secret to sticking to it 'til it's done?

New wheels and memories

It seems the time has finally come to say farewell to our minivan... it just up and quit on us...well, actually the transmission 'broke'...and it's getting too old for any more surgery! We had been thinking it was time for something more suitable since we usually aren't transporting a large family any more. I've enjoyed our old minivan...it was roomy and comfortable and got us (and others) to where we needed to go for the last 9 years, including a number of longer trips...not to mention being used as a 'cargo' van moving people, bikes (can't forget Howardville), sound systems, and drums hither and yon. It could always be counted on.

We may have a little difficulty agreeing on what our next wheels should look like... I've quite enjoyed the higher ride and never worrying if there'd be enough room for passengers and 'stuff'. Hubby, on the other hand, is thinking he'd like to have a car. Oh no... Sonshine just came to mind... how could we possibly do Sonshine again without a van! We're tenters, people...that means hauling a lot of camping stuff! Then again, maybe we're getting too old for the whole tenting scene (sigh) - fun, but a lot of work!

So, any good suggestions out there for us? The scary thing is, we just licensed our old family car...I mean OLD... Pontiac Parisienne for our son to get around with. It left our driveway for a few years while our oldest enjoyed it...but somehow found it's way back to our yard when he needed something better :) It's banged up, rusty, and falling apart ...but loved (by some)! I, on the other hand, would rather not be seen in it, but for now we'll have to get around somehow whilst on our search.

So, if you see a BIG red boat sailing down the road with a little lady in it (seemingly little as she crouches down low - actually the seats are practically on the ground!)...be sure to wave! I'm just making a few more memories!!

Make mine chocolate!

Well...I thought if nothing else, I could post about the wonderful

chocolate dessert I made for Valentine's dinner.
Yes, we stayed home since I wasn't up to much....
but also, everything was booked here in our little city!
I had planned all along to make a nice candlelight dinner
for the three of us - but alas, my man tried once more to see if
he could take me out...
somehow incessant coughing fits and 'romantic dinner out'
don't go well together.
So...we whipped up some Indian butter chicken and brown rice,
some herbed bread and salad - it was wonderful....
but the best part was... these...

Individual German chocolate cakes

They were delicious and I will definitely make them again.
They look like a bit of work, but really not at all - well worth any effort!
I found the recipe a while back on a website for flour....
at the moment, the name escapes me...
but the recipe doesn't - I'll post it in the kitchen !

Oh, another bonus...they taste even better on day two...
I won't tell you how many I ate!

Running on empty - time to reflect

As I sit here convalescing, it came to me how this might be something I needed to go through... in fact, maybe it's good for me! Before you think I'm crazy or I think I'm losing it myself, I better continue. I have been busy 'doing' for so long that I guess my body needed a break... ok, it's more like a 'crash'. I rarely get this sick and I have no choice but to lay low right now. I sure do miss seeing some special little people, but it certainly has given time for reflection... always a good thing.

I wonder....do we sometimes allow things to creep up on us in our spiritual lives? We go and go, keeping busy with all sorts of 'good' things... but perhaps neglecting our spiritual nourishment and quiet rest with God ...running on empty. We need to stay connected to our life-sustainer - our tank-filler! Our creator longs to know us in a personal way... too often we only give Him what's left of our time. If we'd only realize how much we gain from getting to know Him more intimately... how our lives and relationships would benefit and perspectives would likely change.

I'm ashamed to admit that I have been neglecting my quiet times, I mean...the alone time with God where it's just He and I. The times when He hears my heart...not just my prayers... where I get to learn what brings Him joy and what saddens Him. There will always be good things to keep busy with... but more importantly, we need to be filled and that takes a different kind of doing... do it with purpose! Thinking back to when my husband and I were dating - I wanted to spend every minute possible with him and our times together always ended too soon. There wasn't much I wouldn't have done for him and I would have been pretty put off if there was no effort made on his part... if he was content just knowing me...

There is yet another component to this... there are/will be times where we need to be the one helping and doing, even if we don't feel we have it to give, or our own health may suffer for it. However, there is one thing I am confident of... God understands and He will be our sustenance ...we can trust Him to bring us through... so don't grow weary.

"And let us not grow wear while doing good,
for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.
Therefore, as we have opportunity,
let us do good to all,
especially to those who are of the household of faith." Gal. 6:9, 10

Now... there's another relationship I'm thinking about right now...one that deserves more than what's left over. This being Valentine's week I encourage all you ladies (it is only ladies that read this, right?) to love your special people with all you've got. Talking to my niece only minutes ago about Valentine's plans she said to me, "We celebrate our love every day". If she could have seen the smile she brought to my face!

We are never guaranteed how much time we'll have together, so make it count. Showing love doesn't have to cost money, but should cost you something... your undivided attention for starters. Go for it - get creative - make your someone feel special!

Thank you, God, for giving me this time to reflect! I would, however, love to feel a little better for my Valentine :)

Feelin' a little waterlogged

(a sampling of what I've been drinking a lot of lately)

I've had this terrible sore throat and cough (don't they go hand in hand?) since Saturday.
As soon as the symptoms started (although I wasn't home at the time)... ok, as soon as I got home, I made myself some tea and kept my mug filled. I'm a believer in drinking lots of fluids to flush out those nasty bugs. Well, I've been doing my part... but don't seem to get relief. I've since lost my voice and communicating has become a little challenging right now, not to mention I'm exhausted from lack of sleep (4 hours tops at night - between coughing, throat too sore to swallow, and getting up to, well, you know... get rid of the tea!).

Right now I'm drinking some tea made with a good chunk of ginger and 1 tsp honey.... very soothing, hopefully it helps keep the tickle away, but I was thinking... and maybe I'll be sorry for asking...but there must be some good home remedies out there.

Please do share... I really need to sleep!

This is the song that actually inspired my blog name (back then it was 'ours') and seemed to constantly come to mind then. I remember singing these words as I reflected on the joy of being a Nana and having the privilege to share in loving and nurturing God's most precious creation! At the same time I realized how immeasurably more that joy will be when we stand in His presence and behold His majesty! There will be no mortal words to describe it!!

This song once again plays over in my mind since Dad left us. I know he prayed in earnest to meet his redeemer, longing to be absent from his body and free from pain. I imagine now, as my mind relentlessly plays back the images of those last moments - him gasping at the sight of Jesus holding out His hand and saying, "Come to me, my son...I'm taking all your burdens now - don't be afraid!

I don't know when my heart will stop aching, but I'm thankful Dad is experiencing more than just a glimpse...he's beholding unfathomable glory!

Little angels, "Big Grandpa"

It's very late (actually it's early tomorrow) and I should be in bed, but I'm not able to settle my thoughts in order to allow sleep to come...so I'll just try to put down some words.

I had wanted to talk about our little angels since we recently learned that our littlest unborn grandchild needed to go meet Jesus and play with his/her cousins. I just didn't know how to put my thoughts into words (and still don't) and so I put it off. What I do know is it's heartbreaking to watch your children go through such pain...and you pray more than ever for God to bring comfort. My niece commented, "Heaven seems a little closer when a child goes home early". How true.

What I didn't know then was that today would be the day that my Dad would finally be able to meet those little angels. Although we all knew it could be soon, I wasn't quite prepared for this day. I had hoped we'd have time to gather around him as his children, to tell him one last time how much we loved him. I am thankful that I was here and could be with him as he was drawing his last breaths, but it was so painful knowing I couldn't do any more for him. As I desperately tried to help him and get a response from him, I also knew that this was the day he was waiting for. He so longed to be out of the body that was causing him so much pain. He prayed for Jesus to take him home. Now he's there, and it's somehow a comfort knowing our little ones were there to welcome him, unafraid. I say that because our oldest grandchild was sometimes a little afraid of "Big Grandpa". He looked a little 'worn' and wasn't able to get up and play as his other grandpa could...but he would have given anything to be able to, and he so loved the little ones!

I'll just leave you with one of the very few more recent pictures I have of my dad. You can't see them here because they're full of pain, but he had the most striking baby blue eyes!!

Love you and miss you so much already, Dad!! Thanks for taking care of our little angels.

something has to give

I think there may be a few of you who might relate a little with this post. I came home from grocery shopping the other day only to find that there was no room in my fridge. Oh I managed to get a jug of milk in but soon realized I needed to do some serious cleaning before I could even put away my groceries.

Here's what didn't make the cut:
~ left-over donut glaze (couldn't remember when I last made donuts)
~ 1/2 jar of salsa (ever throw something out just because you didn't want to taste and make sure?)
~ a mushy pepper
~ out-dated yogurt (let's just say I've switched loyalties in yogurt)
~ a sandwich bag with a variety of stale cubed cheese (left-overs from a Christmas party)
~ shriveled cranberries (I meant to make one more yummy recipe with these)
~ 3 overly soft apples
~ 1/2 lemon (it was the wrong colour for a lemon)

Wait! There's more...these next items weren't bad at all...just couldn't see a reason to let them take up space anymore:
~ coleslaw dressing (purchased for those rare occasions when I make coleslaw - from now on I'll make my own)
~ raspberry vinaigrette (another item bought for trying a new recipe - poor reviews)
~ 2 opened bottles of Worcestershire sauce (I tried to combine them, but this particular lid is not combiner-friendly)
~ almost empty bottle of Olive Oil Sundried Tomato dressing (yummy, but not enough for one more salad)
~ empty ketchup bottle (but it was a nice size)
~ a beautiful jar of jalapeno jelly (I discovered purchased doesn't hold a candle to homemade)
~ 4 varieties of mustard (the family really didn't take well to these)

So, now I'm ahead of my chores for today - have a nice clean fridge with no surprises (for now!)

Oh, and the jalapeno jelly - the flavour was ok, but it was thick as paste. A good jelly's gotta melt in your mouth - shouldn't have to chew it! Do you understand now? The jar was really cute though (it didn't go into recycling) and you gotta give it points for colour!

This post is a little late in coming since we had guests and blogging

wasn't a priority....you understand I'm sure.

Hard to believe Christmas is now past and other than having eaten

way too much good food, we're trying to get back into a routine....
like going to bed at a decent hour again :)
Our house guests have all come and gone... everyone arrived back
to their homes safe and sound. Thank you Lord for journey mercies!!

We tried something new this year... the kids stayed overnight Christmas Eve
(we found room for everyone), and so far the reviews are good!
The babies went down without complaint while the "bigger boys"
decided to make the fun last until well into Christmas morning.

It was fun waking to the sound of happy little ones and
watching them wander around in their pj's, excited to be
at Nana & Papa's still,
surrounded by aunties and uncles, getting their fill of all things good.

Christmas morning brunch was definitely a hit, although
the wonderful smells made it difficult for some of us to wait
until all the goodness was ready!
Liane surprised us with her bruschetta

(here's the recipe)...
and, I almost didn't serve the cranberry scones I made since
they took longer to bake than I realized...but oh my
they were worth waiting for! I'll share that recipe soon.

We enjoyed the various gatherings and visits from out-of-town
friends and family members...played a few new games,
and discovered that watching men do hula hoops is very therapeutic!

Seriously, it was good to see some faces we rarely get to see,
to meet the newest and cutest little grand niece,
and to witness the work of God's hand in people's lives.

Thank you God for blessings more than we deserve, and for allowing
us to see just a glimpse of your handiwork and answers to
the littlest and greatest of prayers :) Thank you for hope!

Well, December brings with it a few birthdays in our family.

My work banquet is coming up and I just can't seem to pin down what to wear.
We have been having 'theme' banquets for the past few years and
each new year seems to be getting more extravagant
than the previous one.
This year....we're going on a 'cruise'!

Apparently will have "hosts" with assigned seating, etc.
Not sure if I like that idea, but worse...I don't know what to wear!
I don't own any formal attire, and frankly, it's just not ME. The only pictures I've seen of cruises, everyone is dressed to the 9's.

Any suggestions people? This is one issue that would cause me
not to show up.....seriously!
I'm sure it will be loads of fun, but the stress of figuring out what to wear,
or even finding it...is more than I need right now.

Honestly, I'd be more comfortable with this...

Since I've been at a loss for words for a new post, or maybe I should say a loss for 'time' to post, thought I'd highlight what my daughter and her friend are up to.
Stacey and Andrea have recently launched an all-Canadian review blog called "Glimpse". Interesting that they picked that name, not at all thinking about my blog name...but I'm good with it...no worries.
Anyway, you need to go check out some of the products they've reviewed. The latest, which I am very interested in is Dream Pearl Soap. It's an environmentally friendly all-purpose, get-out-pretty-much-anything kinda cleaner, and it's not toxic! I can go for that!!

is as cute as can be,
and has already had a few milestones ...

...she made it through those first few teeth,
celebrated the big "1",
mastered the 'walk' (? wiggle) ...

and has proven to be a real trooper
having had her first (hopefully only) surgery

and, though she was feeling pretty lousy,
her eyes lit up when big brother walked in the room
and she gave him a smile :)

We're thankful for God's protection over her!

I even wanted to wait...
~ to celebrate Thanksgiving 'cause I just did't feel like bathing with
the turkey, so it could get a rinse too...GROSS!!

Down to the crunch...UPDATED PICS

First of all, I have to apologize that I haven't posted pictures of the renos lately...my camera batteries are dead and I've put the recharger in a 'safe' place - but where exactly that is, I can't remember right now...so, not many pictures to speak of. Many things are displaced with the kit/DR areas being mostly cleared out. So, I can post a partial picture of the bathroom which I had already downloaded previously. The **tiling is not done in these photos, but it's the best I can give right now (sorry Kathy). Maybe I'll go pick up some other batteries to use until I find the charger. (**UPDATE - I picked up another battery charger - one we can also use in the vehicle...so here are a couple of better pics of the bathroom, with tiles done)

I love the paint colour (it's a greenish-brown)
and I wasn't sure at first about not having the listelli
trim around the top (long story - they were damaged & returned),
but I like it just the way it is.
We also did cork flooring, which I LOVE - it's warm!
the opposite wall, where the vanity will go..
and, you can't see it, but there's a shower to the left of the tub

OK...on to the issue at hand. We have really got to decide on our flooring NOW because the cupboards are coming in less than 2 weeks...but I am having trouble making that decision. We like the idea of bamboo (thinking 'green') and perhaps that's what we should do...because it is a real wood product, it's warmer that laminate. On the other hand, laminate is so durable and will stand up for years to come. Just one example...as hubby was putting up the door frame in the new bathroom, the phone rang. Thinking it was secure, he reached for the phone and the frame pieces parted ways and came crashing down on the adjacent bedroom laminate floor, nails down....not a mark! Impressive!! However, the look and warmth of the bamboo is alluring.
Then, I'm not sure what to do on the stairs, which go down off the main entrance. We'd love to follow through with bamboo on the stairs as well, but it's so hard should a little one take a tumble. Any suggestions here? We would do carpet down the stairs, but the carpeting at the bottom of the stairs is almost 10 years old (clearly visible from entrance) and would be difficult to match up...AND we don't want to replace downstairs carpeting right now. What to do....any suggestions?

There's definitely something going on...is it me? or my computer? ...WHAT?
Somehow I've (or someone else?) managed to erase all my bookmarks!!
And I wasn't trying to empathize with Stacey either.

You gotta understand I probably had in excess of a hundred (my son would say more) bookmarks, all marked and categorized for future reference...
..sites with fabulous recipes, home reno pages,
wonderful sites I go to for encouragement and uplifting, friends blogs,
gardening sites...Oh I'll miss that one!!...and the list goes on.
Some days I get so frustrated that I don't know more about these
"metal boxes". Honestly, I know I'd know if a prompt came up
and said, "Are you sure you want to delete all your bookmarks?"
Anyone else experience this?...maybe there's some sinister internal
program on this computer that says....'let's hide all the bookmarks
once they look too organized'

Well, there's no time now to try to fix this...so I guess I'll be starting from scratch.

Oh, and there's one more thing...why is it when I think I've got a
post ready and then go to post it...it's all re-spaced?
Can anyone tell me how to fix the margins
so that the way the post looks whilst I'm typing is the way
it actually comes out in the end??

In the meantime....we are painting....wish me luck!

Rainy Day Monday

Today... we were blessed with some much needed rain...

...what I really wanted to do was just stand outside
with my face to the rain and, just for a little while...
forget about all the cares and silly things on my "to do" list

But, since I didn't feel like re-drying my hair, (vanity? no.. lazy!),
I held back and opted to do some much needed baking
Ok, I'm not sure I really needed these, but lately have been craving them!!

I was also craving the smell of fresh-from-the-oven multi-grain bread,
which would have been so wonderful with some homemade soup...
but ended up with these and some homemade pizza instead

Sounds crazy... but I was disappointed in myself at the end of the day.

Next time....I WILL go stand out in the rain til I'm soaked to the bone
and maybe, if I'm lucky, there'll be a special someone home
to enjoy the moment with me :)

Reno Update

Well, I know many of you have been patiently waiting for some
word on how our renos are coming along. It's been a long,
slow process - for a long time our attention was needed elsewhere
...on things that were much more important than two-by-fours,
bathroom fixtures and paint colours...

BUT ..
we're finally back at it!

So...where are we now???

- the bathroom is waiting for tiles and the final plumber visit
(Dustin has been using the shower although there is no door)

- some finishing work to do on the mudding throughout kit/DR

- the old ceiling has to be fixed and spiffied up for the texturing
(remember the old 'stipple' - that came off)

...then I can paint...the colours are waiting! YAYYY

- we took the plunge and tore out the old cupboards this week
even though the new ones aren't ready until September..
.. so I'll be learning to live with minimal dishes/accessories
and washing all the dishes by hand (no dishwasher after today)

our "new" diningroom for the next several weeks

- we finally accepted the fact that there will be too many issues in
repairing the old floor and so the decision has been made to
tear out only one layer of subfloor (there are two, and who knows
how many floors have been put into this house over the years)

our cupboards (5 visible)

anyway...that's all I can share for now
gotta go help do some demolition since dh's back is
not doing good - SCARY!!!

Oh the Joys of Spring!

So, what is it about springtime that has me wanting to purge..

I mean PURGE, every storage space in my house
On Saturday I had just had enough of not being able to see
the floor in our bedroom closet, or the top of the night table...
SO, I took everything that was on the floor and dresser,
and let it know it was no longer welcome in my bedroom
(it found the hallway floor)
that way it had to be dealt with and not just put back.

Now, I know I should have purged much more, and I will - TODAY :)
Maybe I'll take a picture, if I'm not too embarassed.
Problem is, there are so many little places like that in my house,
the pantry, spare bedrooms, cupboards...even the bathroom.

I even got Dustin in on the fun and he brought a bag full out of his room
just between us...that was only the tip of the iceberg!!

Why do we/I think we have to keep everything?
So many of those 'things' were left sitting in a corner or on a shelf
for months, ok, maybe even years...unnoticed!
You'd think it would be easy to get rid of them....not so!
You know the thinking.."but, I might need that" OR "so-'n-so gave that to me"

SO, today will be stage two...
and I will show no mercy!
There is no storage room in my house - so out they go!

Wish me luck...that I won't give in...I NEED to do this! :)

Wicked week!

I hope not too many of you have been hit with this crazy flu bug that's going around. So far several of our family members have had one form of it or another...cold symptoms, fever, aches, laryngitis, back pain, neck pain...not fun!! Even some of the little ones fell prey.

I've got a big pot of chicken noodle soup on and looks like it may not go far enough.

I had planned to get lots done today ~ I guess there's always next week....seems like I've been having to say that for one reason or another for a while now. Les' back is just not good and of course his arm is still painful from the fall he took a couple of weeks ago. We're supposed to be cleaning the church today as well. I guess I should be happy just feeling better than most of my family!

Good news though, it looks like our plumbing fixtures are on their way so hopefully we can have our bathroom back in the next few weeks!! Oh right, I just said Les' back and arm aren't good - nevermind. Volunteers anyone?

I find it so frustrating when I go to make a post and

I'm still figuring out how this all works most of the time,
so for me to 'fix it' takes quite the effort.

My favourite little man came to visit last night

as mommy and daddy took the Youth to a concert

We didn't have time for all the fun things we wanted to do

We started with baking cookies. I couldn't believe how well he
managed with the tools!

He reminded me part way through that
we had forgotten 'our' hair nets!

Soon we could enjoy some milk & cookies

Mmmmm - double chocolate oatmeal

then... we settled in for a short movie (Booples),
and a game of marbles
(which consisted of separating them into colours
and then placing them back in the bag)

then...he requested his favorite little video of
"that little girl"

...before we knew it...
mommy was at the door and it was time to go (drat!)

...all is still well

Giving Entertainment

The group Bruce has been involved with, Candlewick Productions, is putting on their own rendition of M*A*S*H. Should be funny! Did any of you out there watch this show? I know, it dates me, but that's ok :) One could not possibly forget the antics of Klinger - always trying to come up with a new reason why they should let him out of the army...

Personally, I liked Captain McIntyre... haha, enough said...

Ok...show dates are this Friday and Saturday and tickets are available at Thornview in Morden.

The best part, you get entertained and the proceeds go to help children in Uganda. Candlewick is teaming up with Heartstrings to build a much needed clinic in Uganda, Africa...sounds like a good occasion to go out this weekend!

So, maybe we'll see you there!

MATTHEW UPDATE

Some of you have been asking how little Matthew has been doing since the terrible burns he suffered a few weeks ago. Here's the latest from his auntie...
Matthew did have to undergo surgery again unfortunately, however, the doctors say the second grafts went much better than the first time and are healing beautifully! PTL!!! Continue to keep him in your prayers. Tomorrow he gets the staples out which may not be a whole lot of fun either.
Otherwise, the burns on the rest of his body (which they didn't graft) are healing well and some of those bandages have now been taken off. If all goes well tomorrow, he may be able to leave the hospital in a couple of days, but will still need to remain close to the hospital until probably next week.
So, continue to keep his mom, dad & baby sister in your prayers too. It's not easy for them being away from home all this time.
On another positive note, they're taking Matthew off his morphine (for 6 hours at a time) and, other than being a little restless, he's doing quite well with that.
So keep those prayers going up on behalf of this family...and don't forget to thank Him for all those things, both great and small, that we take for granted every day.

Well, today I'm hoping for many readers even though I haven't been keeping up with this blogging thing very well lately! PLEASE READ ON...

There's a two year old boy, his name is Matthew, who was severely burned a week ago. Matthew was visiting with his mommy at grandma's house where grandma and mommy were making some spaghetti sauce. Matthew, in his little two-year-old mind decided he wanted to help stir the sauce and so when they weren't looking he somehow managed to get to the stove and pull the entire pot of spaghetti sauce down onto his little body.
Matthew is in Winnipeg and had his first surgery on Thursday for skin grafting. Imagine what that must be like....I can't!! Just having a two-year-old grandson myself, my heart is just overwhelmed and breaking for this family.

SO, whatever you're doing....STOP, yes.. right now....and send up your prayers for this little boy and his family. Pray that his body would heal miraculously that he wouldn't need more painful surgeries. Pray that the skin grafting he just received will take, and heal beyond all expectation. Then there's the burden of the expenses this family will be facing since this is the second time in a short while that they will have an ambulance bill coming in the mail, not to mention taking time off work and having to stay and eat away from home in order to be by his side. You see, just weeks before this Matthew's mom went into premature labour and delivered her second child 5-6 weeks early. So, although they've become all too familiar with the hospitals and streets of Winnipeg, their lives are once again disrupted as they eat, sleep and breathe life in critical care.

I wish I could have posted this earlier, but only learned of this last night. Thankfully God is not limited by time or any of these details, so send up those prayers!!

Afternoon in the valley...

This afternoon Glen & Anna invited us to join them

at their cabin in the back 40

for some tobogganing and 'fresh air' hiking.
It was a gorgeous day so we figured we were up for it.
Since the cabin isn't accessible by road in the winter,
you have to park on the road and hike in.
Although it was nothing like the first year when we
hiked in snow up to our hips, it was still a good work-out..
(work-out does NOT sufficienty describe what we did)
I think I scared away all the wildlife with my
huffing and puffing...and grunting..
oh, but it felt good....eventually :)

it'll be a while before we enjoy sitting at

Food to warm the soul...

Lately I've been in a slump as far as feeling
like I've accomplished much of anything.

Yesterday was my day off and often I just feel like vegging...
however, this turned out to be an energy-burst kind of day.
Actually... as I was lying in bed contemplating what
the day would look like and thinking how wonderful
it would feel to sleep in,
I suddenly remembered I had made a haircut appointment..
... in 20 mins!
Up I jump and fly into the shower... don't know about you,
but I don't like to leave the house before I'm feeling fresh and clean!!
Funny how quickly I can get ready if I have to!!

While out I managed to get one other thing
checked off my "To Do" list - felt good!
Came home for what I thought would be a short while
before heading out to do a few more errands... and then...
I got the urge...no DESIRE...to make something special for supper.
Now, I don't mind cooking usually, but coming up with the menu is
always the challenge.

I decided on Italian sweet and sour sausage... it's one of our favorites
and I love making it because it's so simple!
Bonus... makes the house smell like you've slaved all day!

This is all you need..
(farmer sausage, Italian-style tomatoes and tomato sauce,
vinegar and brown sugar)

With that taken care of and some extra time on my hands
I decided to try my hand at making... PRETZELS!!
Might not sound like a big deal to you,
but ever since I experienced REAL german pretzels
I've been on the hunt for a good clone.
I think this recipe comes close....and yes, I want to share!

These were absoloutely yummy and the texture
was so close to what I remember...
just need to make them bigger next time!
The three of us ate every last one of them at dinner...
The recipe? it's a keeper and I'll share it in the next couple of days.

A whirlwind.......

I know it's been a while but as you can see from the last few posts, not only was our life busy with all things Christmas, we also had birthdays and a birth to celebrate!

A little recap...

Christmas was such a delight now that we could finally see and hold the newest family addition.. Jillian is such a sweetie and we're so grateful she's here! She made it into this world on time to take part in the Baby Dedication service a few days later!

We missed our first Christmas program in 27 years in our church! I must say that it felt a little odd. We had a gathering to go to and since none of our kids were involved in the program this year, we didn't go. Our Youth actually did an entire service the week before Christmas. They did an amazing job and when the entire Youth group went on stage to sing at the end, I had goosebumps! I hope this becomes a new Christmas tradition.

It was interesting to work around feeding schedules and nap times but we did manage to do the traditional Christmas Eve pizza & candlelight and all the little ones were awake when we opened presents. Rowan was especially fun to watch. A little tradition we have is for each person to say what they're thankful for. Even Rowan participated. When asked what makes him happy, he quickly responded, "Selah makes me happy!" He's so sweet with her. I can't wait to watch these little ones growing up together.

In between gatherings we managed to get in a combined birthday party for Warren & Heather. They both enjoy the same kind of food so coming up with a menu was the easy part. What I hadn't planned on was working until almost 4:30 - Yikes!! I rushed home and amazed myself at how quickly I could make 5 dozen vereneke - a record for me for sure :)

What would normally have been a house full of youngsters playing and adults in every room, turned out to be a much smaller event as we got together with my extended family. Some couldn't be there due to other gatherings and others were sick. The flu bug has hit particularly hard this year. I must say, though, it was nice to all be able to fit around the table, although some people will be eating left-overs for a while!

New Years' Eve was spent with friends and family at church, playing games until we welcomed the new year. With so many young families, the closer we got to 2008 the smaller the group became as one-by-one couples bundled up their little sleepy-heads and went home. Had a lot of fun learning some new games - so beware if you come by in the next little while, I'll be pulling out the cards!

Other than that, we've managed to stay fairly healthy considering how many others have been sick over the holidays. Hubby had a bug for a couple of days but he's back to his normal self. I, on the other hand, had to be different - no flu for me...just a nasty sinus headache for over a month now, which seems to be getting more intense instead of better (I am not one to get headaches). Today is sunny and bright and should make me happy, but I'm cowering inside...staying away from the windows.

I'll try to post some pictures soon - haven't had time to download them - OH YES...I got my camera back...except, there was a problem with my S1 so they sent me an S3 to replace it. I'm happy!
